Pilot Program Brings Learning Opportunities to Local Students
The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito (BGCSDTO) have joined forces with San Diego LabRats to provide science, technology, engineering, art/creativity and math (STEAM) learning experiences in a fun and safe environment after school for fifth through eighth grade students in San Diego County. The STEAM Discovery Center will be hosted at the BGCSDTO Griset Clubhouse in Encinitas running from April through June, featuring a technology lab, hands-on games and activities, and academic coaching resources for STEAM subject areas. Community members will also have the opportunity to propose their own STEAM-focused classes and work in partnership with the Discovery Center.
“Future success for our students requires skills in STEAM areas,” said San Diego LabRats Chief Science Officer Dr. Shawn Carlson. “The Discovery Center will remove the fear and replace it with ‘fun while you learn’ activities. Our scientist-educators will provide robust, dynamic, and fun programming that nurtures the scholarly and entrepreneurial pursuits – and inner spirit of discovery – for our young people. And using the Next Generation Science Standards as our guiding compass, we will help shape and create our next generation of leaders in science and technology.”
The Encinitas Charities Consulting Group (ECCG) is leading fundraising for the project, and aims to make one scholarship available for every paid student. “It’s in the interest of everyone in our community to extend this program to all students no matter their financial background,” said ECCG founder Jim Merrill. “We believe progress is created when a community unites in a purpose, and educating our youth is something we can all be passionate about and get behind.”
Discovery Center Hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays; 3 to 5 p.m. on Fridays; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. For registration information visit www.sandiegolabrats.org.
