Encinitas Lions Presents Public Speaking Contest
The Encinitas Lions Club recently held its 82nd Annual Student Speakers Contest at the Encinitas Library. Three local students – David Detweiler (San Dieguito Academy), Joshua Tashoff (San Dieguito Academy), and Sissy Sugarman (Dehesa Charter School) – participated in the contest, delivering speeches that tackled the topic “Freedom of the Press: What Does It Mean?” to an audience and guest judges Pat Launer, Elizabeth Warren, and Mikey Adam Cohen. Joshua Tashoff, a senior and speech and debate team member at San Dieguito Academy, took home the title of Club Level winner.
Founded in 1917, Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization, with more than 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. The clubs focus on global causes including vision, hunger, environment, diabetes, childhood cancer, disaster relief, and youth.
