The San Diego Filmmakers recently announced the San Diego Filmmakers scholarship program and Gala Scholarship fundraiser. The evening event will take place on Nov. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Encinitas Community Center Ballroom. Features of the evening include a showing of Free to Rock, the new feature length documentary by four-time Emmy Award Winning Director Jim Brown. In addition,  a star studded panel from the film will be present for discussion. The panel consists of Director Jim Brown, Executive Producer and former Bank of America Vice-Chairman Mr. Nick Binkley. Dr. Robert Edelman, Professor of Russian Studies at UC San Diego and the inspiration of the documentary, and Valery Saifudinov, the “father of Russian rock n’ roll”.

The San Diego Filmmakers Scholarship is a cash award used towards the completion of a student-related film project. Many film students have great idea for films, but lack the funding to bring them to the screen. The San Diego Filmmakers Scholarship help remedy that. Awards will be given in increments of a $500 scholarship to middle or high school student filmmakers and $1,000 to college level filmmakers. One more scholarship awards will be granted to each grade group. The final works will be shown at the May San Diego Filmmakers meeting. In addition, Emmy Award-Winning Journalist and former CNN San Francisco Bureau Chief Greg Lefevre will serve as a mentor throughout the process.
