Join the Composting Community and Become a Master Composter

Solana Center, in partnership with the City of Encinitas,is offering a course on composting and how to teach it to others. The Master Composter Training course will take place every Wednesday night from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., starting September 19, 2012 and ending October 17, 2012. Residents of Encinitas are invited to join us for this in-depth exploration of compost and vermicompost (composting with worms).
Composting is the controlled decomposition of organic material such as leaves, grass,fruit and vegetables. Using microbes, decomposers, or worms, food scraps arebroken down into a rich soil amendment. Amending soil with compost and worm casting scan conserve water, reduce the need for fertilizer, and increase plant vigor and pest resistance. Not only do composting and vermicomposting return valuable nutrients to the soil, they divert organic waste from our landfills. The course will take place at the Solana Center and there is a $20 course fee. Learn about local canyon and lagoon plants and animals while helping to protect their habitats by picking up litter along Indian Head Canyon as it leads to Batiquitos Lagoon. Your cleanup efforts will help protect this valuable open space and lagoon for the plants, animals, and people that call Encinitas home. The Solana Center for Environmental Innovation and the City of Encinitas are partnering to lead cleanup groups as we explore the local habitat and learn about protecting our waterways. Families, individuals, and community groups are all welcome. Join us for a fun and rewarding morning!
Used Oil Filter Exchange Events
Recycle your used oil filter and receive a new one free! Join the Solana Center at one of the following used oil filter exchange events and receive a new filter of equal or lesser value when you bring in a used one to be recycled. This offer is valid only between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the following locations and dates. Limit two filters per customer.
